Jumpseat Flight Finder

Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) is the world’s largest pilot union, representing more than 65,000 pilots across 40 U.S. and Canadian airlines. Their primary function is to monitor airline safety and security while advocating for its members.  ALPA serves as a representative for pilots when interacting with law-makers and negotiating contracts with airlines.

What is Jumpseat?

Jumpseats are auxiliary seats available in the cockpit or passenger cabins for off-duty crewmembers that are not operating the aircraft.
Flight deck jumpseats are made available to all individuals authorized to use them, in accordance with federal requirements.

Problem

The air transportation industry currently lacks a standard platform through which pilots can access a streamlined version of the following information in real time:
-Jumpseat service from point A to B
-Known Crewmember Program rules
-Jumpseat policies
-Cancellations, delays, and layovers
Additionally, last minute changes in flight status make it difficult for pilots to find accurate, current data when they are already at the airport.

Goal

Revolutionize the way in which pilots source vital information by designing an intuitive application that provides streamlined, real-time flight data.

The Research
Competitive Analysis: FlightView

FlightView's full-featured flight tracking app puts real-time flight status and airport status right where you need it.

benefits

-Track flights and view status updates, including current weather conditions at your destination.
-See your plane's current location on the map.
-Proactively plan changes to your itinerary in response to live updates.
-Prevent double booking with calendar integration.
-Share flight status with friends and family via email, text, or social media.

Key Insights

1. Users are looking to find a Jumpseat, so let’s address their primary need faster.
2. Cleaner and intuitive User Interface on app

Solutions

Optimize the users’s journey by removing unnecessary decision-making and intermediary
steps and providing them with key interactions sooner. It’s most important to give them the “core feature” that they downloaded this application for, which is flight finder.

Task & User Flows

Using the persona needs I created the user flow diagram.
Identifying the key screens and actions Adam would need to find a flight that brings him home, II was able to determine what features and screens were crucial and beneficial for the App.

TASK

Adam wants to search for available flights and get live notifications.

Wireframes and User Feedback
sketches

Before designing wireframes and mockups, I decided to sketch some ideas on how I could make the design intuitive, always keeping the user in mind. I didn't want users to spend too much time before being able to figure out how the app works.

lo-fi wireframe

The next step in my process was creating a low fidelity wireframe that allowed me to gather some initial feedback from the pilots and the team.

Must Haves

Takeaways

At the beginning, there were a lot of challenges understanding the concept and needs of the pilots but through the use of diagramming, sketching and interviewing I overcame these challenges and created an impactful tool.

What's Next?

After going live, we continued testing, receiving feedback, and executing iterations and updates. At weekly meetings our team collaborated to address urgent task with the goal of improving user experience.
